| Stars in all phases of their evolution in one image! Slightly above and left of center is an evolved blue supergiant called Sher 25. It is surrounded by a gaseous ring and bipolar ejection nebula. The star cluster in the image center contains young, massive stars. Their stellar winds have cleared away a pocket in the gas cloud surrounding them, and eroded pillar-shaped structures (top left) of dense gas and dust. Below the cluster are two protoplanetary disks (proplyds) which contain newly forming stars. At upper right are dark areas called Bok globules. |
